Sacro-Occipital Technique
All of the chiropractors at Burnham Family Chiropractic Centre are trained in and utilize predominantly a chiropractic technique referred to as Sacro-occipital technique (S.O.T.).
S.O.T. was developed in the 1930’s by Dr Major Bertrand DeJarnette. The focus of his research was on understanding how problems in the nervous system and spine develop as a result of tension in the membrane which surrounds the spinal cord, known as the spinal meningeal system. Inadequate flow of the fluid which surrounds the brain and spinal cord within the meningeal covering leads to adjustments in the body to compensate. Such compensations can lead to spinal stress and poor joint performance.
Compromised flow of fluid is manifested primarily at the major attachment points of the meningeal membrane, particularly in the cranium (head) and pelvis. Sacro-occipital technique adjustments are very powerful but gentle and are aimed at reducing tension in the meningeal membrane, thus restoring normal fluid mechanics and thence normal body mechanics.
The nature of the pelvic and cranial adjustments used in S.O.T. are such that it is particularly appropriate in the treatment of children and the newborn to optimize normal early development.
Many of our clients enter treatment even though they have no pain. They use our services to ensure optimum function of the nervous system. This is particularly the case with children. Much effort is made by our practitioners to patiently explain and if possible, demonstrate the effects of a source of nervous system interference.
